THE MYSTERY OF THE LOST COLONY

In 1587, 117 English men, women and children came ashore on Roanoke Island to establish a permanent English settlement in the New World. Just three years later in 1590, when English ships returned to bring supplies, they found the island deserted with no sign of the colonists. After nearly 450 years, the mystery of what happened to the colonists remains unsolved.

Over the years we have had some famous actors in the production.  Andy Griffith starred as Sir Walter Raleigh in the late 1940’s, Christopher Guest was part of the production in the 1980’s and Lynn Redgrave played Queen Elizabeth.  You never know who will be in it this year that becomes famous throughout the years.

Do you have an elevator in your OBX home?

Weston’s Law

Governor Cooper on Friday signed H619 which has new requirements for residential elevators starting October1st. The new law applies to homes that are rented for 15 days or more in any calendar year.

The legislation includes prohibiting gaps between the landing door and the hoistway face of the car of 4 inches or more, and gap fillers known as baffels must be installed in elevators that have more than 4 inches of space.

Elevator doors and gates must be rigid and withstand a force of 75 pounds applied without permanent deformation, a three-quarters of an inch deflection in the door, or displacement of the door or gate from its tracks.

New Restaurant Alert

Bros Sandwich Shack – New location in Nags Head

The “Seriously Awesome” sandwich and burger spot!  Bros got started by a pair of brothers born and raised in Texas who worked in kitchens on the Gulf Coast, North Texas, and eastern Tennessee, in every concept from fine dining to fresh seafood and barbecue. While vacationing on the Outer Banks the Bros learned of an opportunity to open a restaurant. A 750-mile journey, followed by a night sleeping on the beach, led to a handshake deal and Bros soon opened in Avon and now they brought their craft sandwiches fresh ground burgers, Bro-Made Pickles and North Carolina craft beers to the Outlet Shops in Nags Head.  I can’t wait to try their French dip sandwich.  Check them out...

Who hasn’t wondered how some of our OBX towns were named, right?  Here are some answers for you…

DUCK

In 1910 Lloyd Toler decided he wanted the cluster of homes on the Currituck Sound north of Kitty Hawk to have a post office…and he put his name forward as postmaster. USPS agreed to the post office and his employment, but they needed a name. Toler looked around and suggested the new post office be named after the area’s most plentiful product—Duck.

SOUTHERN SHORES

Frank Stick purchased 2600 acres of barren sand dunes, swamp, and maritime forest north of Kitty Hawk in 1947. His plan called for developing the four square miles into a resort community, and he wanted to suggest warm sunshine and soft sand. The word north couldn’t be part of the name. Since it was on the shore, why not Southern Shores?

NAGS HEAD

A myth exists that a lantern was tied around a nag’s head, and the motion of the horse walking back and forth looked like an anchored ship to entice sea captains to shore. That tale, however, is largely discounted. It is more likely that in the late 18th or early 19th century, someone with ties to England purchased a tract of land where Nags Head is today. Nags Head was a fairly common place name in England, and it is entirely possible that the new landowner named his holdings after his hometown. There is no town of Nags Head in England today – at least not according to Google Maps. However, almost every hamlet, village, town, and city in Great Britain appears to have at least one Nags Head Pub.
