Owens Restaurant in Nags Head is celebrating their 75th anniversary

Still owned and operated by the same family at the same location. That is impressive. In honor of celebrating this accomplishment I wanted to share their famous “HUSH PUPPIES” recipe. You will want to try this out, they have stayed in business this long for a good reason! FYI: One of Andy Griffith’s favorite restaurants

INGREDIENTS

2 ½ cups self-rising flour
1 cup white cornmeal
2/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 ¼ cup cold water
¼ cup evaporated milk

INSTRUCTIONS

Mix first five ingredients thoroughly; add egg and blend well. Combine milk with cold water; pour all liquid into the dry mixture. Mix gently, but quickly, just enough to blend everything together. Allow to rest 10 minutes at room temperature. Drop batter by rounded teaspoons into 325-degree vegetable oil (dip spoon in cold water after dropping each spoonful). Fry, rolling frequently, until golden brown, 6-8 minutes.
